Silvesterchläuse in Urnäsch – a tradition full of joy!

On January 13, we celebrate Old New Year's Eve in Appenzell Ausserrhoden. On this day, the beautiful, scary, and terrifying Silvesterchläuse roam the area, visiting the first farms early in the morning and continuing well into the night.
The beautiful ones bring good luck and prosperity, the ugly ones drive away evil and bring protection for the new year, and the beautiful-ugly Chläuse can do both.
This custom is a wonderful tradition that strengthens the sense of community. Many thanks for the fascinating information about Chlausen, Chlaus fever, and the warm hospitality.
