Two Years of Robot-Assisted Surgery with VELYS™: A Milestone in Knee Surgery

Since spring 2024, the Berit Clinic has been successfully using the VELYS™ robot-assisted system for total knee replacement and partial knee replacement surgeries. With the introduction of this innovative technology, we have also been able to perform unicondylar knee surgeries using the VELYS system since fall 2025. The VELYS™ robot combines the expertise of our experienced surgeons with state-of-the-art technology to achieve optimal results.

Innovative technology for precise procedures

The VELYS™ robot-assisted system was specifically developed to increase surgical precision. This CT-free system supports the surgeon by providing relevant information for the precise placement of the prosthesis.

The process begins with exposure of the joint and the placement of reflectors that map the surface of the affected joint. Taking into account the ligamentous apparatus and the leg axis, a detailed 3D model of the joint is created. The surgeon can then plan the individual steps of the operation on the screen. The system simulates the expected outcome before the actual bone preparation takes place. The surgeon performs the planned incisions in collaboration with the robotic arm.

Precision and consistency at every step

A high-speed camera combined with the three-dimensional mobility of the robotic arm and hydrophobic optical reflectors makes it possible to adjust the resection plane in real time. This ensures precise and consistent execution of the plan, allowing for individual customization of the prosthesis for each patient. Previous data show that this surgical technique shortens recovery time and improves functional outcomes.

Trained experts for outstanding results

The surgeons at Berit Clinic undergo specialized training and certification for the VELYS™ system to ensure safe and effective use. As the first clinic in Switzerland and the second in Europe, we have two VELYS™ systems. Robot-assisted surgeries are now part of our daily routine, and we successfully performed over 1,000 such procedures in 2025 alone. Our experience with the VELYS™ robot to date has been extremely positive.

It is important to emphasize that not every surgeon at the Berit Clinic uses the VELYS™ system. The surgeon’s experience and expertise remain the decisive factors for the success of every operation. At the Berit Clinic, only experienced and qualified surgeons perform knee replacement surgeries to ensure the best possible outcome for our patients.
